Noam Chomsky is keynote speaker at our inaugural People Before Profits dinner and award ceremony.
CPE’s inaugural People Before Profits Dinner and Award Ceremony was a wonderful and inspiring event. Close to 100 people came to enjoy good food and wine, mingle with old friends and new, honor the awardees and to hear Noam Chomsky, one of the greatest champions of justice and democracy in our times. He also gave a public talk on “Who Owns the World?” (see below).
Chomsky is a world renowned linguist, political critic, and activist. He has been a professor in the Department of Linguistics & Philosophy at MIT for over 50 years. In addition to his groundbreaking work in linguistics, he has written on war, politics, and mass media, and is the author of over 100 books. Professor Chomsky is a prominent cultural figure and was voted the “world’s top public intellectual” in a 2005 Guardian newspaper poll.
At the dinner and award celebration, Chomsky spoke at length about the Public Relations (PR) industry, how it serves the interests of the rich and powerful, and the impact on the elections. He concluded by saying:
“The task of the PR industry is to delude and confuse the public. The task of CPE is the opposite. It is to reverse the process—to create an informed public capable of making rational decisions. (CPE) helps to bring to the public the idea that an economy can be designed to satisfy human needs, not profit for the few”
CPE presented People Before Profits awards to the following people:
- Noam Chomsky for his life-long commitment to social justice and democracy.
- Jon Weissman for his great work with WMass Jobs with Justice
- Maliha Safri and Suresh Naidu, CPE staff economists, for their dedicated work with Occupy Wall St. in NYC.

“Who Owns the World? Resistance and Ways Forward”
Over 2,000 people came to see Noam Chomsky speak at the UMass Fine Arts Center. Some people weren’t able to get in, but those who got seats were enthralled by a wide-ranging talk about empire – first the British, then the U.S. – the various measures taken to maintain ownership/control of that empire, and the ever arising popular resistance that has challenged that dominance throughout history – right up through to the present.
Noam Chomsky is a national treasure and CPE was honored to host this galvanizing talk.
